Yuschenko Calls On Businesses To Invest In Agriculture

25.04.2008

President Viktor Yuschenko has called on businesses to invest in the Ukrainian agricultural industry.

The presidential press service announced this in a statement.

"The terms and peculiarities of the market have created such a circumstance in which the production sector is super-interesting," Yuschenko said at the opening of the fourth annual international conference entitled "Against the Trend."

Yuschenko noted the huge potential of Ukraine as a producer of agricultural goods and said that the trends on the world agricultural market largely facilitated development of the Ukrainian agricultural sector.

"It is a huge renaissance for Ukrainian agriculture. It only remains to bring the correct rules of the game," Yuschenko said.

He described the reduction of the government's participation on the agricultural market as a positive trend.

At the same time, he criticized the Cabinet of Ministers' restrictions on export of agricultural crops.

"Attempts to manage domestic prices through closure of the external market is an erroneous policy," he said.

In general, Yuschenko described the Ukrainian economy as attractive to investors.

According to him, Ukraine has had positive economic indicators and a dynamically developing market in recent years.

According to him, this is confirmed by the significant inflow of investments in the past three years and the rapid increase in the value of Ukrainian companies.

"Speaking about the growth of the share index, it is strange to say but we are second in the world," Yuschenko said, adding that such comments should be made carefully.

That notwithstanding, according to him, this shows the colossal potential of the Ukrainian market.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Yuschenko has expressed concern at the slow pace of financing of the agricultural sector that is stipulated in the 2008 state budget.
