President Bush said the United States should "get off oil" Wednesday as crude prices hit record highs and renewed his support for ethanol use despite concerns the corn-based fuel is driving up food prices and isn't more environmentally friendly than gasoline.
"We gotta get off oil, American has got to change its habits," Bush told a crowd at the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference, a meeting of global energy officials and an adjoining trade show that's the largest all-renewables show ever held in the United States. "It should be obvious to all, demand has outstripped supply, which makes prices go up."
As the conference got into its second day, crude oil on the New York mercantile exchange jumped nearly $4 on falling oil inventories, trading over $104 a barrel and setting a new all-time record.
Part of Bush's plan to wean the country off oil includes big investments in ethanol.
The energy bill passed by Congress and signed by Bush in December calls for refiners to replace 36 billion gallons of gasoline with ethanol by 2020, up from about 7 billion gallons today. About half of that will come from ethanol made with corn.

Experts predict that purchase interest will remain most of the companies that were interested in the previous tender for selling the Odesa Portside Plant (Odesa region) invited in 2007.
"Most of those companies submitted their bids for the Odesa Portside Plant privatization tender in 2007, possibly, will be still interested in purchasing it this year, in any case they will again file their bids to obtain the latest information on the object," Oleh Morkva, director general of the Kyiv-based asset management company Ineco-Invest, told to Ukrainian News.

In his turn, head of the agro-industrial complex and chemical industry department of the state information analytical centre Derzhzovnishinform Dmytro Hordiichuk supposes that Akron (Russia) might not take part in the competition.
"Maybe, Akron will not take part," he said.
As to Morkva, this year political component is very important as for the Odesa Portside Plant, so as for privatization of other major targets.
"It is necessary to find consensus in the political-legal environment, in order that all the concerned parties of the process really allow for holding this tender," he said.
As to Hordiichuk, the enterprise costs up to USD 2 billion.
"I appraise it [the plant] at USD 1.6-2 billion," he announced.
